Sweet Sixteens!
So a debate arouse over dinner, between myself, my husband & our friend: I say Sweet Sixteens are ...mind my language...bullshit! Lol...My husband says...Not! I don't know where the tradition came from and I'm not sure if all who celebrate it go Big! However many that I've known about are quite glamorous: new, expensive clothes, hair and make-up professionally done, banquet halls and catering, 100s of guests, hired photographers, videographers, etc - the works!! Really now?! That's like a Wedding Reception!! How about putting that 10 grand into your first car, or your college fund or a dream vacation?? I don't know - for whatever reason this really gets me bothered...How about y'all give me your thoughts on this one: Sweet Sixteen - it's a Go! or a No?! Lol... ; ) Thanks Everyone! I'm out. : )

As someone who turned 16 without any Circ and pompenstance it is no different than any other overly celebrated birthday. At 16 what can you do? Get your driver's license I guess...but that's kinda it right. And that's if your family has a car for you to drive anyways cause you can't legally rent one yourself. It is beyond overrated. I just remember some friends really just getting jewellery and that was only female one's. I have no idea what guys did other than not come to class and go write the G1 test. Maybe celebrating your 18th birthday as you are now an adult and can vote and have your opinion actually start to change the area you live in through that. Celebrating your turning 19 in Canada and other ages elsewhere because you can now drink alcohol legally is something to consider.I think celebrating your launch into adulthood would be more significant yet that birthday kinda gets swept under the rug. I agree with you sweet 16 way over done, especially that old mtv show those kids were going crazy and so were the parents. Better to save that money to help the child later in life. Like you said a car, education anything else that money could be used for that is going towards a party in your mid/late teens! How about a graduation trip once they complete highschool and get that diploma that would be nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks Angie...I really liked that you mentioned the 18th birthday, regarding voting I mean...yeah, that is pretty Big and I agree, that would be something worth celebrating! It's true, it's sad it's "swept under the rug": mind you, I think it might have to do with the lack of awareness regarding the importance of voting, amongst the younger populations. I think it has to do with the way voting is targeted, mainly towards older generations...honestly, I never really understood (nor thought to take an interest, in fact) in elections, politics and voting...until I was in University I think! Thanks to you and another friend actually. For example remember, most people thought Obama's strategies for reaching the (younger) masses, was pretty clever: texting his campaign ads & voting stats to cell phones? Lol...maybe our communities need to look at getting more "hands-on" like that...? Lol... ; ) : ) Good "food for thought" my friend: Thanks!! ; )
